When does the driver have the legal right to refuse to allow a passenger to board the bus?

Travelling by bus is one of the most popular and cheapest ways to get around. However, as with any other means of transport, there are certain rules that must be followed. After all, in some cases, the driver has legal grounds to refuse to allow a passenger to board.  Let's take a closer look at situations where this can happen.

Legal grounds for refusing to board

The driver has the right to refuse to allow a passenger to board the bus in the following cases:

  1. The passenger does not have a ticket or has not paid the fare. This is the most common reason for refusal to board. The driver has no right to transport passengers without payment, as this is a violation of the law.

  2. The passenger is in a state of alcohol or drug intoxication. He/she may pose a threat to himself/herself and others.

  3. The passenger violates the rules of behaviour in public transport. These include:
             - smoking in the bus cabin;

             - bringing prohibited items into the cabin;
             - aggressive behaviour towards other passengers.

  4. The traveller is carrying dangerous items that may pose a threat to other passengers or themselves. These include:
             - weapons
             - explosives;
             - toxic substances.
  5. The passenger has an incomplete package of documents required to cross the border. It may seem that the problem does not concern the carrier, but in fact, it is of great importance. Just keep in mind that a single passenger trying to enter Europe without proper documents can result in a fine of up to €3,000 for the carrier! Therefore, an incomplete package of documents may be grounds for denial of boarding, especially if the data on the ticket does not match the information in the documents, for example, different surnames or names.
  6. If the rules for transporting animals are violated. For example, the absence of relevant documents and a carrier.
  7. In the case when a passenger is late for a bus and, using a taxi, catches up with the bus and demands to stop on the way. Our team always tries to help in such situations, but it is important to note that a stop on the road can only be made by prior arrangement with the carrier.

It should be noted that the rules may vary depending on the specific carrier and the laws of the country. Bus drivers are obliged to comply with the established standards and provide safe and comfortable service for all passengers. After all, every problematic passenger means additional hours on the road.
